Exercise for a new age
After you've settled into an ongoing fitness routine
that works for you, you'll still need to reassess it from
time to time. Set it and forget it doesn't work when
it comes to safe and successful workouts as you get
older, says Daikeler. It will be important to adapt your
fitness regimen as your body goes through the normal
changes brought on by aging.
"Activity is critical to remaining agile and mobile
and independent as you age," he explains. "But if
you do an injury to yourself, you derail that plan.
You need to be body aware."
Daikeler says although he has gradually shifted his
own workouts over the years to compensate for his
body's changing limitations, that doesn't mean he's
letting up on his activity levels.
"At age 53, I can say I'm working out as intensely
as I can ever remember," he says. "I am not
pushing myself to the point of injury, but I'm also
incorporating flexibility and agility work [now],
more than just pumping iron and [getting] lean."
More than anything, says Daikeler, you need to
adopt a mindset that fitness is "non-negotiable—
not this thing that goes in fits and starts."
"Move it or lose it," he says. "If you use it, you can
accomplish incredible things."
"The only silver bullet for a healthy lifestyle is the one that
supports the way you want to live and is for real."
