Referrals from people you trust, such as your own doctor or friends who have used a clinic already, can be a good way to get started, says Dr. Scott Treatman, director of employee health at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y. "So often, finding a [facility] is going to be from word of mouth in the community." KNOW WHAT YOU NEED The next step is to think carefully about what kind of care you or a family member is looking for, says Mary Dixon, a certified registered nurse practitioner affiliated with Holy Spirit Health System, Camp Hill, Pa. Clinics can provide routine preventive care like yearly cholesterol and prostate checks, colonoscopies, and screenings and immunizations for tetanus and shingles. They may also offer acute care for common, non-life- threatening conditions such as poison ivy, insect bites and stings, possible scrapes and lacerations, low-level sprains and fractures from sports activities, ear discom- fort and upper respiratory colds and sinuses. "At many clinics and walk-in services, you get a 15-minute time slot to talk about one condition," says Dixon, so it's especially important to come in knowing what you want to have evaluated and ensure the clinic has the capability to handle that condition.
