"It's an issue that we're facing more often because the average age of marriage and first child has gone up dramatically," says Dr. Bradley Van Voorhis, an OB/GYN affiliated with University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. "We're seeing more women with fertility issues as a result of aging." FACTS ABOUT FERTILITY Dr. Ryan Richardson, an OB/GYN with Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C., says women should be aware of the limitations of trying to prolong fertility while they're still young enough to make realistic plans for postponing childbearing. "Women are born with a predetermined number of eggs that is approximately 1 to 2 million, and by the time they're 51, there are about 1,000 left," says Dr. Richardson.
