H E A L T H Y L I V I N G I t is no coincidence that renowned poet and writer Maya Angelou also believes strongly in taking ownership of her own healthcare. When you value the good things in the world, she believes, you want to take care of them—including yourself. "Art helps us to heal ourselves," explains 85-year-old Angelou, an American studies professor at Wake Forest University who is also an accomplished author, playwright, actress, dancer, singer, director and civil rights activist. "Without [art], there's the voice which derides and blasts and curses. That same voice can turn around and sing the most irresistible song, and say the most irresistible poetry. Which voice is best for the growth of the spirit and of the body? The one which is soothing and encouraging." In fact, Angelou's own voice helped inspire Forsyth Medical Center, a Spirit of Women hospital located in Winston-Salem, N.C., to open the Maya Angelou Center for Women's Health and Wellness last summer.
