Staying Fit
Is CrossFit
By Sandra Gordon
I
f you're looking to boost your calorie
burn and get fit fast, CrossFit could be a
natural solution.
The unique exercise training program,
which began in 2000 at one location in
Santa Cruz, Calif., and quickly spread across
the country to more than 7,000 CrossFit
gyms, uses constantly varied, high-intensity
functional moves. It's designed to push you
to the limit for dramatic gains in fitness.
Each CrossFit gym (known as a "box")
offers a Workout of the Day (WOD),
which varies daily. In an hour, you'll use
nontraditional weight-training equipment
such as kettlebells, sandbags, water-filled
implements and suspension systems to do a
certain number of exercises and repetitions
in specific amounts of time, such as
12-minute intervals. You'll also do traditional
cardiovascular exercises like running, biking,
rowing and powerlifting. As you become a
CrossFit regular, you'll compete against your
CrossFit classmates too, which can be both
fun and motivating.
