Gathering as much information as possible from reliable sources is key, according to Seattle-based attorney Mark Demaray, immediate past president of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. "There is a lot of misinformation out there about adoption, and there is no area where being an informed consumer is more important," says Demaray. "Go to someone who is going to give you a broad picture of the adoption services available to help you decide which type of programs work best for your family—someone in your community who is familiar with all types of adoptions." Local adoption information fairs, educational sessions that are sponsored by adoption agencies and attorneys with experience in adoption law are all good potential resources, he says. I
